Bellflower Township

Bellflower Township, which was originally called Prairie Township, was created on May 17, 1858.  Although the Village of Bellflower is located within Bellflower Township, the village and the township are two independent units of government.

Bellflower Township elected officials include:

  • Township board - supervisor, four trustees, and a clerk
  • Highway commissioner - independent of, but works together with, the township board

The township contracts with an assessor to establish property tax valuations.

Township funding comes from a variety of sources including property taxes assessed on all township property owners, including village property owners.

Township taxes fund financial assistance to community members, the Bellflower Township Cemetery, and partially offset the expenses of running the village-owned Bellflower Community Center.  Township taxes and state motor fuel tax-sharing support road and bridge maintenance outside the village corporate limits.

Board meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in Town Hall located at the Bellflower Community Center.  Meetings are open to the public.  An agenda is posted at least 48 hours in advance on the Bellflower Community Center exterior bulletin board.
